Grades Pre-K–5 Grant Recipients
1st Place: Jaimie Miscioscia
Cayuga Elementary School – Lake Grove, New York

Jaimie Miscioscia, co-founder of PS I Love You Day — a national movement focused on kindness, connection, and awareness — brings the organization’s mission into schools, creating safe spaces for students to share, build emotional skills, and support academic success while modeling compassion, resilience, and service through mentorship and community outreach.
“I believe that social-emotional learning is just as important as academic instruction, especially for students with disabilities, because building self-awareness, emotional regulation, and strong relationships creates the foundation for all meaningful growth and long-term success.”
2nd Place: Judith Goldfarb
Charles A. Mulligan Elementary School – Central Islip, New York

Judith Goldfarb is a dedicated educator who puts students first, ensuring they receive the support they need. A bilingual fourth-grade teacher, she delivers lessons in two languages and even earned a second degree to better serve her students, while supporting families through community outreach like annual holiday giving.
“I see my role not just as a teacher, but as someone who actively works to remove barriers so all students, regardless of background, language, or ability, can fully engage in meaningful learning and succeed.”
3rd Place: Daniel Casamassa
Pulaski Street Intermediate School – Riverhead, New York

Daniel Casamassa profoundly impacts students, especially those facing academic and developmental challenges, by rebuilding confidence and fostering a love of learning. He dedicates personal time to support success and promotes kindness, teamwork, and perseverance. His motto, “persevere and never give up,” creates a positive classroom where students feel valued and proud.
“I strive to build a classroom rooted in respect, trust, and hard work, where students learn that perseverance makes anything possible and are inspired to live with integrity, kindness, and respect for others.”
Grades 6–8 Grant Recipients
1st Place: Lindsay Guzzo
Samoset Middle School – Lake Ronkonkoma, New York

Lindsay Guzzo, a sixth-grade science teacher, inspires students through hands-on, inquiry-based learning that builds curiosity and critical thinking. She also shapes school culture as a Student Government advisor and PTA member, leading service and community initiatives. Her dedication and energy foster confidence, responsibility, and a lasting love of learning.
“I believe in creating an environment where students feel supported and challenged, one where they understand that effort, growth, and character matter just as much, if not more, than achievement.”
2nd Place: Jon Stecker
P.J. Gelinas Middle School – Setauket, New York

Jon Stecker, a middle school math and science teacher with nearly 30 years of experience, builds students’ confidence and love of STEM through engaging projects and extra support. He coaches athletics, mentors students, and communicates with families. He also introduces emerging technologies like AI to prepare students for future success.
“By building strong relationships and incorporating meaningful, hands-on learning experiences, I aim to keep students motivated and invested so they can become thoughtful, capable individuals who are prepared for the future.”

Nesaquake Middle School – St. James, New York

Susan Porter, a sixth-grade teacher, fosters a classroom built on empathy, high expectations, and student confidence. She supports individualized growth, helping students overcome anxiety and view mistakes as learning opportunities. As a leader of the inclusive school talent show, she unites the community while promoting innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.

1st Place: Christine Maniscalco
West Islip High School – West Islip, New York

Christine Maniscalco, a Library Media Specialist with 25 years of experience, transforms the school library into an inclusive hub for learning, creativity, and collaboration. She integrates makerspace tools, technology, and AI into instruction and shares her expertise through professional development and conferences, strengthening student learning and the school community.
“I strive to create for my students the same sense of safety and belonging that an educator once gave me, and to ensure every student knows they matter.”
2nd Place: Frank Verdone
Hampton Bays High School – Hampton Bays, New York

Frank Verdone, a business educator, prepares students for 21st-century success through college-level accounting, financial literacy, and virtual enterprise. He uses hands-on learning to build entrepreneurship and leadership skills, guiding students in business plans and projects. He also mentors clubs, builds business partnerships, coaches golf, and helps students prepare for life beyond high school.
“I want students to see the connection between what they’re learning and the real world, and to leave my classroom with skills they can use beyond it.”
3rd Place: Rahana Schmalacker
Central Islip High School – Central Islip, New York

Rahana Schmalacker, an English teacher, fosters student growth through creative, real-world learning. She connects literature to the arts, launched a journalism elective, and strengthened the school newspaper to amplify student voices. Through innovation and partnerships, she helps students build confidence, explore passions, and value their experiences beyond the classroom.
“In my classroom, we are both teachers and learners. We respect each other’s experiences, value diverse perspectives, and recognize that learning shapes who we are.”

This award is open to teachers instructing from Pre-K through 12th grade in any public or private school district in the United States.
No, you do not need to be a Teachers FCU member to nominate a teacher or be nominated.
Please submit your nomination between March 2, 2026, 9:00 AM ET through March 16, 2026, 11:59 PM ET
Yes, you can nominate yourself.
Anyone above the age of 18 can nominate a teacher.
Finalists are chosen by a committee based on the following criteria:
25%: Completeness of the nomination;
50%: Compelling written essay nomination;
25%: How many nominations did you receive?
Teachers may be nominated multiple times: 1-5 nominations = 5 points; 6-10 nominations = 10 points; 11-15 nominations = 15 points; 16-20 nominations = 20 points; 21 and more nominations = 25 points
There is no limit to the amount of times you can be nominated and multiple nominations are encouraged!
Winners are chosen based on public votes. Voting will be conducted on the Teachers website at teachersfcu.org/teachercontest. The educators with the most votes in each category will be selected as winners.
Public voting will be held from April 20, 2026, 9:00 AM ET through April 24, 2026, 11:59 PM ET on the Teachers website at teachersfcu.org/teachercontest
There will be a total of 9 winners with 3 winners in each category:
- Pre-K–5: 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place
- 6–8: 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place
- 9–12: 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place
Using the contact information that was provided in the nomination, finalists will be informed between April 1 and April 10, 2026. Winners will be announced on Teachers website and through social media on Teacher Appreciation Day on May 5.
The winners in each category will each receive a grant to be used for classroom supplies, as well as Teachers FCU swag for their students. Grants are as follows:
Grades Pre-K–5
- 1st Place = $2,500
- 2nd Place = $1,500
- 3rd Place = $1,000
Grades 6–8
- 1st Place = $2,500

DISCLOSURE & CONTEST RULES
Nominations can be submitted via teachersfcu.org/teachercontest. You must be 18 years or older to submit a nomination. Checks will be made payable to the schools of the winning teachers. Please allow up to 2 weeks for a check to be made payable to the selected schools. A W-9 form must be filled out by the winner's school and be placed on file with Teachers Federal Credit Union upon receipt of funds. Not limited to any state or school district. Winners selected will have their photo taken. Winners grant Teachers Federal Credit Union the right to use any images, name, voice/video, recordings, and any contest submissions in all forms of media, for all legal purposes, including but not limited to advertising, trade, or any commercial purpose through the world and in perpetuity. The contest is not applicable to Teachers employees.
